Annotation

What are the appropriate procedures to adopt in the attempt to arrive at an understanding of the literary or philosophical works? S. confronts the two 'orthodox' answers to this question: the context view that a text can only be understood in the perspective of its context (religious, political, economic, etc.), and the autonomy view that the text is the key to its own meaning. He tries to show where each of them fails.
