An attempt to approach the topic/focus dichotomy concerning old and new information in utterances in such a way that they are unequivocal and can be used to explain some phenomena in semantics and pragmatics, in particular with respect to the truth-conditions of sentences, the concept of 'local relevance' of one utterance for another, the relation between question and answers, some negation phenomena, and some aspects of focus in questions.
