Annotation

Certain apparent ambiguities of tense, the progressive and perfect auxiliaries, and 'when' and 'while' time adjuncts in English can best be understood as ambiguities of the process of reference, rather than of sense or semantics. Given an appropriate account of the mechanism of reference, some apparently diverse meanings conveyed by these categories can be seen to be derived from a single sense.
