Using a modified version of the model of analysis suggested in J. Sinclair and R. Coulthard (1975: 'Towards an analysis of discourse'), S. examines a corpus of telephone conversations (in English). Some principal types of questions are characterized as to their syntactic form, illocutive function, and elicitative force.
