As radio and TV communicate to a most heterogeneous audience, a journalist often does not know whether he should handle a piece of information as 'known' or 'unknown', which brings him in conflict with Grice's maxim of quantity. S. studies two (Swedish) strategies of compromise: (i) presenting such matters as presupposed 'background' (by due downgrading); (ii) reporting it with some reservation of newness (by an adverb such as 'ju').
