It is argued that not the oral/literate distinction per se accounts for the often noted differences between them; rather, typically oral and typically written discourse reflect relatively more focus on interpersonal involvement and content, respectively. T. shows that many features that have been associated with literacy are rhetorical strategies found in spoken discourse.
