An attempt to indicate how themes from cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, linguistics, and theories of early socialization can be integrated in order to gain some further understanding of the ways in which deictic systems draw on fundamental principles of cognitive organization. A general model of psychological functioning, and the place of indexical sign qualities in it, is sketched; principles of the early cognitive developments of children are presented; and the development of deictic systems is discussed in this framework.
