Interpretation is impossible without inference-making processes and without the construction of coherence. This principle leads to the focus on four kinds of inference involved in the construction of coherence, viz. syntactic inferences, inferences with recourse to the mental lexicon, semantic-logical inferences, and action-oriented inferences. A section is devoted to disorders of these various kinds of processing.
