V. explores the structure of casual conversation. She argues that this structure varies according to the social distance between the interactants. This variation in turn permits a structural classification of conversation into two types: minimal and non-minimal. The functions of these two types of conversation differ: the first serves to establish and/or maintain contact between the interactants while the second is an expression of greater involvement.
