Annotation
V. advocates a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural comparative lexical approach to linguistic action as an indirect way of discovering universals of linguistic action. The approach is illustrated with comparative Dutch-English analyses of the sets of linguistic action verbials (i.e. verbs and verb-like expressions) used to describe linguistic silence, acts of lying, directives, and a number of formulaic routine expressions.
