This study of the modal auxiliaries in English scientific texts is based on a corpus drawn from university textbooks and scholarly journals. Over 1500 examples have been confronted with a theory essentially based on A.Culioli's seminars. V. argues that in scientific texts the use of the modals is pragmatically related to the progression of knowledge.
