Annotation

With reference to Japanese, the role of knowledge about the sociocultural context in conversation is discussed; such knowledge is called a presuppositional culture space. It is suggested that pragmatic presuppositions, which may be signalled by parts of a surface sentence or a complete surface sentence, have to do with the appropriateness of a sentence in a context and that they subsume logical presuppositions.
