V. discusses the philosophy of language and its significance for Marxism (the study of ideologies, the relation of the basis to the superstructures, objective psychology), and proposes steps toward a Marxist philosophy of language (discussing language, speech, utterance, verbal interaction, theme and meaning) and toward a history of forms of utterance in language constructions (discusing syntax, reported speech, indirect discourse, direct and quasi-direct discourse - with special reference to French, German, and Russian).
