Annotation

Report of a study supporting the notion that children's communicative use of language is rooted in the situation of the utterances. It is argued, however, that an independent theory of context is not needed, but that what can be studied with profit is the acquisition and use of the devices that language provides through deixis of focusing the hearer's attention on the intended referent.
