S. argues (i) that there is a wide range of intuitive relations among sentences which are exclusively identified by an underlying concept of 'focus', and (ii) that a theory of generative grammar that best characterizes that concept of 'focus' must rely on an underlying system of 'propositions'. Such a 'propositional grammar' is outlined.
