In verbal interaction, sub-sequences occur if certain 'preconditions' for the progression of the interaction are not fulfilled. The authors develop a typology of sub-sequences (according to which type of precondition is referred to, and which type of speech act occurs in the sub-sequence). In the final chapter, the categories are applied to mother-child interaction.
