A number of theoretical views and models concerning language understanding (in particular its semantics; F. focuses on the given/new distinction and problems in the recognition of topic) are discussed, relevant experiments are described, and the problem is situated within the question of the effect of cultural knowledge and cultural goals on the problem of what we learn from being told.
