This study aims at exploring the linguistic contexts of the word jakby, to be able to distinguish prototypical uses and innovative ones, and determine context-sensitive functions of the latter. The unconventional jakby appears a pragmatically multifunctional but no longer hedging device, syntactically more separated from the contiguous textual material than its canonical base.
