Annotation

This paper argues that the 'Handbook of North american Indians' contains some false etymologies and loanwords. It is demonstrated, for instance, that the primary meaning of Proto-Algonquian 'na:tawe:wa', is pit viper, and that it secondarily referes to a member of an Iroquoian tribe, and not vice versa.
