Annotation

This paper discusses the social, cultural, and educational functions of classroom code- switching in the English-dominated educational system in Hong Kong. This practice appears to be teachers' and students' pragmatic response to the symbolic domination of English, as many students with limited English knowledge struggle to obtain an English-medium education because of its socioeconomic value.
