This paper proposes an alternative approach to the Greek historical diglossic phenomenon, emphasizing the differing social functions of Demotic (public) and Katharevousa ('pure') Greek. It also discusses the recent metalinguistic prophecy of language decline, and the ensuing questioning of Demotic Greek.
