This article sets out to reconstruct some of the developments leading to the combination of features displayed by Berbice Dutch Creole, via a reconstruction of the options in the initial language contact situation. It is shown that the choices can best be explained as a linguistic compromise between two languages in contact, Dutch and Eastern-Ijo.
