This paper deals with the complex situation of vernacular literacy in The Touo language of the Solomon Islands, considering the absence of any institutional support for the initiative, (first language speakers of Touo being moreover typically multilingual), and the existence of this vernacular literacy in a restricted niche of linguistic ecology and of competing vernacular orthographic traditions.
