Annotation

This paper challenges the belief that Official Malagasy constitutes an apt communication tool for all by examining the problem of comprehension and intelligibility in the context of southern Madagascar. The findings suggest that Southern Malagasy speakers are not adequately served by the Official Malagasy language due to language variation, poor proficiency in Official Malagasy, insufficient intelligibility, language attitudes, and ethnolinguistic vitality.
