Annotation
This article curtly explores the history of the ‘native speaker’ and the thought changes that lended the notion an inherent legitimacy, before discussing recent examples of linguistic/discursive othering, such as exterminationist UK newspaper reports on grey squirrels to preserve the ‘native’ red squirrel, and recurring/comparable topics in an examination of three texts from the SCOTS Corpus of Glasgow University.
