Annotation

This case study of San Lucas Quiaviní Zapotec (SLQZ), spoken in the Mexican Central Valleys of Oaxaca and in Los Angeles, shows how a language vitality judgment that solely regards the home community, may engender an inaccurate appraisal. Signs of language endangerment in a transnational community become clear in a cross-border sociolinguistic analysis. Due to constant travel between the two communities, language use in Los Angeles is reproduced in San Lucas, thereby integrating Spanish and English into traditionally Zapotec-only fields like the home.
