This paper presents a description of adverbs of proximity by ranking them equivalently to counterfactual markers, thereby analyzing the negative inferences as counterfactual implicatures. In this approach, a given Principle accounts for the indefeasibility of the implicatures associated with ALMOST. It is argued that this Principle applies to counterfactual meaning crossgrammatically.
