Annotation

This study which investigates 'respectful' adjacent generation interactions and 'joking' same or alternate generation interactions in Mijikenda, shows that address forms signal and reaffirm generational identity and relative position in a clearly defined social structure and relate to 'correct behavior'. M. thus suggests to replace Brown and Gilman's (1960) hypothesis by a more general and socially persuasive one.
