Annotation

This paper argues that the failure of the ambitious mission language policy of turning Mota into the lingua franca of the south-western Pacific, was due to the fact that Melanesian missionaries considered intercommunication as a technical problem and failed to take into consideration the social and cultural factors that define the achievement or fiasco of any language plan.
