This study explores why Asian former colonies like Cambodia, the Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam have chosen a different language policy than many African countries, by preferring respectively Khmer, Lao, Myanma and Vietnamese as their national and official languages, instead of retaining a European language (i.e., English or French). It thus examines whether a national language policy makes a difference in a multilingual context.
