Annotation

When modern Israeli Yiddish-speaking ultra-orthodox Haredi women, with a perfect command of formerly men-only holy tongues as Hebrew or Aramaic, quote from sacred texts e.g. when giving sermons to other community women, they use diverse strategies to hide their real bilingual linguistic proficiency, so as not to exhibit holy tongue competence on a higher level than considered socially permitted for women. This elucidates an aspect of the sustained Haredi attempts to retain a traditional life style in an altering world.
