A discussion of the functions and forms of three language varieties in Toba-Batak (a language of North Sumatra), viz. 'intimate language', the 'language of lamentation', and 'medico-magical' language. The paper is followed by a long list of 'standard language' words and phrases with their equivalents in the other varieties.
