R. and D. use J.J. Gibson and E.J. Gibson's theory of 'direct perception' as a source of insights into the problem of meaning and the acquisition of language as a system that communicates meaning. The view is compared with the meaning theories of C.E.Osgood, E.H.Lenneberg, and J.Piaget.
