With reference to O. Togeby (1979: 'Men hva' med kongen?'), H. criticizes much text linguistics for defining itself in competence terms. He argues that a text will look complete and coherent - or not - only when interpreted as a purposive action (hierarchy) in a specified context, which makes it a matter of performance.
