Halliday's and J. Boyd and J.P. Thorne's (1969: 'The semantics of modal verbs') notions of modality are applied to 'caahiye' constructions in Hindi, the underlying semantic structure of which is supposed to be 'I think it obligative for someone or something to undergo the effect of an action in a particular way'.
