This paper introduces a quantifiable measure of lexical entrenchment as an operational measure of onomasiological salience, illustrated on the basis of a corpus of Dutch clothing terms. The defended hypothesis on lexical entrenchment considers Berlin's basic level hypothesis as not entirely adequate.
