Annotation

G. argues that there is more of a one-to-one relation between surface form and encoded illocutionary force than is claimed for example by Sadock (1974: 'Toward a linguistic theory of speech acts') and Green (1975: 'Nonsense and reference'). To show this, he takes a closer look at Sadock's examples illustrating the distribution of 'please'.
