Annotation

S. shows that, without the assumption of a preceding context, two and three-word compounds tend to be stressed according to Chomsky and Halle's Compound Stress Rule. But if a context is introduced, stress placement changes and can sometimes be explained in terms of the intended contextual effects. (The paper reports an experimental study.)
