Annotation

Based on the theories of Van Eemeren and Grootendorst, and of Jackson and Jacobs, the author argues that the many encoding options speakers dispose of in conversational discussions, can be fitted in a limited number of global structures, and that general conversational principles procure a functional explanation of the use of these structures.
