Annotation

Using Peirce's semiotic framework and his 'Icon, Index and Symbol'-trichotomy of sign types, this paper discusses the three-way indexical 'stretching' of metaphorical iconicity: 1. Indexical pointers from the original metaphorical icon and its object project entire semantic fields which are often holistically iconic of one another; 2. The sequence of related metaphorical icons within a poem's text often creates an indexical overlay, that is itself iconic of the overall subject matter; 3. The figural displacement of poem objects by their metaphorical icons often generates a series of indexical vectors in semantic space, thus outlining an iconic map of the poem's world view.
