This paper explores data from children learning Spanish for the development of linguistic person in an inflectional language. The findings challenge theories that posit uniformity across children, present a maturational sequence of innately endowed categories for person, tense, and number, or state that universal grammar relates the emergence of any of these to the presence of overt subjects
