The majority of the studies on African American English focused on adolescent and adult language behavior, which led to inappropriate child language expectations in public school settings. This article surveys current research on grammatical, phonological, semantic, and pragmatic development in AAE child speech and discusses its effects for professionals in second-dialect instruction, speech-language assessment and/or intervention programs.
