This paper argues that an adequate account of English second language varieties, which demonstrates that they differ qualitatively from the categories identified in current sociolinguistic typology, and offers evidence of socio-cultural determination of language variation, requires the descriptive and explanatory power of the variationist, interactionist, and sociology of language paradigms of sociolinguistic theory.
