Annotation

This paper offers a linguistic and sociohistorical analysis of the creole origin of Barlovento Spanish. Focusing on the Venezuelan colony, it argues that Africans had as much access to Spanish there as they did in certain islands such as Cuba. The paper also addresses effects of the Spanish crown's monopolization of the slave trade.
