Annotation

This study argues that in multilingual Shillong, the capital of the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya, the spread of English at the cost of local languages, can be explained in terms of the prestige of English, its use in higher education, enhanced geographic mobility and the conflicting demands of different kinship systems.
