Annotation

This study discusses how Western rhetoric became associated with stylistic writing devices only in China: in the late 1800s Western rhetoric was learnt via Japanese professors who distanced it from oratory, and early 20th century Japanese theories and Anglo-American speech figures were integrated into existing Chinese literary and literacy traditions.
