This paper discusses the institutionalization of a patronage system in Cameroonian journalism, that challenges the profession’s ethics and its public credibility, by according journalists economic privileges -through various kinds of rewards or 'gombo'- considered unavailable to them. It also addresses the definition of journalism and the role of the media in Cameroon’s democratic transition.
