Annotation

This paper proposes two interrelated hypotheses to explain the interactive orientedness of the first-person pronoun I in English: the first-person pronoun operates as a sign, indexed to four ordinary contexts; and interactive implications of the I pronoun are inducted into oral discourse through the interplay of two or more of the presumed contexts.
