Annotation

This case study of Lachixío Zapotec considers voice qualities serving as primary signs of speech registers. It also explores similar usage of voice qualities in other Zapotec languages and in Nahuatl and Mayan, two unrelated language families, in order to indicate that such voice registers are possibly characteristic of Mesoamerican culture.
