Annotation

This study explores how gender affected the televised political Royal-Sarkozy debate of 2 May 2007. Whereas Sarkozy excessively displays deferential politeness and deploys a broad set of registers, Royal is more combative, formal and concrete. These differences are assumed to be defined by gender assumptions on politeness and by the ethos of power discourse.
